BBT5 Cash!

I didn’t win a TOC seat, as only the top 2 in the Sunday invitational are awarded, but I did come in 4th place Sunday for a nice cash of $170.

I was pleasantly surprised when I logged in Sunday evening & table opened up w/me in the BBT5 Sunday Invitational Freeroll. This was the second week, and I had just assumed I didn’t make the A list, so a special thanks goes out to Al, who I assumed was responsible for getting me in!

I had lost about 2/3 of my stack, as the tournament was about 90 minutes into it when it opened up. As you can see 3 other players were also not there, and getting blinded out:

I was basically a short stack ninja for the whole night. I did get a nice rush of cards shortly after the bubble, including AA vs AK. I felt bad for Jeremy (Shabazz Jenkins), as he was the big chip leader when we got to the final table but went out before I did.

All in at 420 was on my right for most of the night, including the final table. He was playing good small ball, raising to 2-1/2 blinds & stealing quite liberally. I repopped him a few times & he folded, but I probably could have done it more frequently given his range.

I assume I am in for the rest of the Sunday Invitational’s, so let’s see how I do with a starting stack of 3,000 ……

March Poker Summary

Ferguson Challenge Update – I started March with $1,735.91, and finished with $1,889.32. The reason it was a winning month was thanks to the last event I played. I chopped the $5.50 PLO8 tournament on March 31st for $259.17, technically 2nd of 277.

I finished second in event 9 of 10 of the NCPC for $85. The top 3 won WSOP entries to a $1500event + $700 in travel money. I have clinched 1st and am looking forward to the WSOP in June. Still not 100% sure of which event, but leaning towards the NL hold'em event on June 23rd.

I am currently re-reading Daniel Negreanu’s Power Hold’Em Strategy. I just ordered Cowboys Full by James McManus while sitting @ the same table with him on FTP.

I am out of the WRGPT.

I did play the PLO8 WPT tourney @ Hollywood on March 13th along with IlliniFan and Predator. I came in 30th, Illini 13th, and Pred 10th. They had 70 entries and paid 7. 1st place was $6700. Not sure now that I want to play the WSOP PLO8 event in June. Will probably just stick with NL Hold'em.

After I got knocked out of the tourney I headed to the Poker Room for some cash games. Started off with $200 @ 1-3 NL Hold'em. Ran it up to $650 on two big hands. The 1st one a KY fan flopped a set of Queens, but checked them on the flop. The turn gave me a flush draw and a gut shot straight draw so I called his $25 bet. The river gave me my flush & he called my $50 bet. The biggest pot I won was $650 I called a button raise w/AQ in the small blind and flopped Broadway. I check called the flop with 2 other players in, and then check raised it all in when a blank hit the turn. The 1st guy went into the tank for 10 minutes so I gave him the old stare down & he finally called. Guy #3 folded & guy #2 showed KJ for top 2. He told the dealer to pair the board, which she did, putting another 6 on the board, but my Broadway was still good. You should have been more specific sir!

I got on the list for 1-3-5 PLO, and cashed out my NL profit & sat down with $200 @ the PLO game. We were shorthanded the whole time I was there, as it was the feeder table for the main game. I played for ~ an hour & ran my stack up to ~ $350 when IlliniFan got knocked out of the tourney & was ready to head home. We chatted w/PMB a bit before heading out. All in all a good day!

I only worked off ~ $20 of my $100 bonus on FTP. Just wasn't very motivated to grind it out.

End of February Poker Update!

February Poker Summary

The Good:

1. I clinched a WSOP prize package with a 3rd place showing in event 8 of 10 of the NCPC! The top 3 win WSOP entries to a $1500 event + $700 in travel money. I’m in 1st and those 4th and below can’t catch me. I’m pretty pumped about this & will be even more so as we get closer to the WSOP. Now I just have to chose which event to play in………

2. I am currently reading Secrets of Short-Handed Pot-Limit Omaha by Rob Hollink & Rolf Slotboom and How Good Is Your Pot-Limit Omaha by Stewart Reuben.

3. I am playing in the WRGPT again this year. My current stack is $44,600, which puts me in 261st place. There are 461 players left. I doubled up a few times. We started on November 17th with 1016 runners crawlers.

4. I am planning on playing the PLO8 WPT tourney @ Hollywood on March 13th. This will give me a good feel if I want to play the WSOP PLO8 event in June.

5. I did receive 2 bonuses from FPT ($100 + $50).


The Bad:
1. Ferguson Challenge Update – I started January with $1,938.02, and finished with $1,735.91. I am seriously considering withdrawing $1500 so I can play in 2 WSOP events while I am in Vegas. Any thoughts? Obviously this would set me back on my timeline to complete the Ferguson challenge, but running $0.27 up to a WSOP entry is not too shabby.



Speaking of the WSOP, I just saw this on Pauly’s blog:
The WSOP is just around the corner and the November Nine is eight plus months away (scheduled for November 6-9th).

Harrah's made some changes. Some are good. Others are neutral. A few blow. But hey, that's the WSOP. It wouldn't be what it is without someone complaining about something! But the indoor Poker Kitchen returns. The Poker Tent will finally RIP.

Here's the skinny...
• 57 gold bracelet events over 51 days.

• Expanded footprint – The giant Pavilion Ballroom (58,000 sq. feet) will be in use this year for poker in the Rio Convention Center. The Pavilion is the largest ballroom at the Rio, and along with the famed Amazon Room (38,000 sq. feet), will make-up the playing rooms for this year’s WSOP. The entire convention space will be used.

• Expanded capacity – Along with expanded footprint, comes more poker tables. A record 295 tables were utilized last year, and this year’s configuration is still being plotted, but expected to offer about 20 percent more tables.

• No Food Tent – The outdoor food tent will now become an indoor food court experience. The Miranda Ballroom, last year used as a room for play, will be converted into a food court with a variety of popular food items for players and spectators.

• Sensational Structures & Starting Chips – Drafting off last year’s success, all gold bracelet events in 2010 will feature triple the buy-in in starting chips and deep structures, providing plenty of play.

• $25K 6-Handed No-Limit – A new event this year will be a $25,000 buy-in 6-handed No-Limit Hold’em 4-day event. Event #52 begins on Wednesday, June 30 at 12 noon.

• $50K Players Championship – The Chip Reese Trophy is up for grabs at the $50,000 buy-in eight-game mixed event, dubbed the Players Championship, which is being morphed from the $50K H.O.R.S.E. tournament run the past four years. This new eight-game format will serve as the true test of the game’s greatest all-around player and receive star treatment, with ESPN cameras covering the five-day event for television. Event #2 starts on Friday, May 28 at 5:00 PM.

• Still Plenty of H.O.R.S.E. – A new $10,000 buy-in H.O.R.S.E. Championship tournament will be offered, to go along with $1,500 and $3,000 buy-ins to the popular game.

• The 4th annual Ante Up For Africa Celebrity-Charity Tournament -- $5,000 buy-in No-Limit Hold’em celebrity and charity tournament on Saturday, July 3, (two days before the Main Event begins) featuring the opportunity for anyone age 21 or older to enter and be seated at the same table as A-list celebrities and top poker pros.

• The Ladies Only No-Limit Hold’em Championship – On Friday, June 11, featuring a $1,000 buy-in and helping to raise awareness for the Nevada Cancer Institute, the official community relations partner of the World Series of Poker.

• The Seniors Only No-Limit Hold’em Championship – On Friday, June 18 , featuring a $1,000 buy-in for all poker enthusiasts 50 years of age or older.

• June $550 No-Limit Hold’em Tournaments – Every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at 1:00 PM throughout June, the Rio will host new $550 No-Limit Hold’em tournaments for those looking for a Hold’em fix. These are one-day structured tournaments, and not bracelet events.

January Poker Summary - A Not So Happy New Year

The Good:

1. I made Iron Man for the 2nd consecutive month. Bronze for Jan, as Silver was well within my grasp, but just got a little burned out the last few days. Not really sure if Iron Man is worth it, in and of itself. I have always chosen the freeroll(s), but are the medals more +EV?

2. I did complete my $50 bonus for being Silver Iron Man in December.

3. I took 2nd place in the January NCPC Event #6, and am still in 1st place with 4 events to go. The top 3 win WSOP entries to a $1500 event + $700 in travel money.

4. I finished both Daniel Negreanu’s Power Hold’Em Strategy and Jeff Hwang’s Pot-Limit Omaha Poker. I am currently reading Secrets of Short-Handed Pot-Limit Omaha by Rob Hollink and Rolf Slotboom.

5. February is filled up with live poker tourneys!

6. I won SCOOP tickets in all 3 of the WBCOOP tourneys I was able to play in! This is awesome, as I had $0.01 in my PokerStars account, so hopefully I can turn my $11, $22, and $33 tickets into something of a bankroll on PS! And then there was this, which almost made the month worth it.......

The Bad:

1. Ferguson Challenge Update – I started January with $2,633.87, and finished with $1,938.02. Has anyone other than Chris ever successfully completed this before by using his bankroll management rules? It is not easy, as when you can play at the higher levels the downswings can be brutal.

2. I was down $564.49 in PLO in Jan. OK, so maybe I’m not quite ready to dominate $1/$2 PLO or PLO8. Have done better recently @ .50/$1 PLO8.

3. I am playing in the WRGPT again this year. My current stack is $6,950, which puts me in 649th place. There are 655 players left. I was outkicked on top pair a couple hands ago. We started on November 17th with 1016 runners crawlers.

4. I’ve wanted to get back to the Hollywood Casino to try some PLO cash game action, but the timing hasn’t been good yet. The do have the WPT Hollywood Open in March, and I am eyeing the PLO8 tourney on March 13th.

December Poker Summary

• Ferguson Challenge Update – I started November with $2,494.77, and finished with $2,633.87.

I may have learned more in December than all the previous challenge months combined. It was certainly a bit of a rollercoaster month, as I was above $3K at one point, and then dropped back down to about where I started it. Had a decent last couple days to show some profit for my hard work.

Obviously the 1st lesson you learn from actually participating in the Ferguson Challenge is actually practicing good bankroll management. Bankroll management works!! Wow, who would a thunk it? Now I had some success back in 2006 & 2007 with some high tournament cashes, but when my bankroll got to be this size I would cash it out & spend it on stuff (plasma TV, trip to Atlantis, bills). I didn’t really like keeping more than $1K in an online poker account. Back then I obviously wasn’t practicing good bankroll management, if I wanted to take a shot in a big tourney and I had the $ in my account I took it.

The second group of lessons I learned have to do with playing in NL Hold’em tourneys. I played in 33 tourneys in December for a net loss of $135.34. I didn’t have any major cashes like I did in November, but I did get deep in a few. In one tourney a couple days ago I had QQ 3 times. Twice they lost to AK all-in pre flop, including knocking me out, and once they held up against 88. So with that, here are the lessons I have written on a post-it note in December:
1. Small Ball works for tournaments.
2. Avoid coin flips, especially early.
3. No big guesses. Sure you’re gonna pick off some river bluffs, but are they really worth it if it’s a big % of your stack?
4. Queens are not Aces – Try to avoid going broke with them, which may mean seeing a flop & reevaluate if AK hits.

The next lesson I learned is around playing better PLO cash games. Quite frankly NL Hold’em online cash games bore me. I enjoy playing PLO cash games and any type of tourney. In December I made a net profit of $289.56 in PLO cash games with 3,166 hands I had 3.98 BB/Hr, and 7.57 BB/100. There is a lot of variance w/PLO so tilt control is a big factor when a donkey hits his 2 outer on you for a $200 pot! Previously I read it was +EV to always buy in for the minimum, wait for a premium hand and get it all in pre-flop in a +EV situation. The current lesson learned is that even AAxx is a drawing hand when the stacks are deep.

Having adjusted to the higher limits, my goal for January would be to finish above $4K.

• I made Iron Man on Full Tilt for the first time in a couple years. I made silver, as it doesn’t take long to get 50 points in a day when you’re playing .50/1 or 1/2 PLO. I finished out my Holiday Hundred Bonus in December, and by gaining Silver Iron Man got an additional $50 bonus in January.

• I am playing in the WRGPT again this year. My current stack is $45,950, which puts me in 177th place. There are 829 players left. We started on November 17th with 1016 runners crawlers.

• I took 10th place in the December NCPC Event #5, and am still in 1st place at the halfway point. The top 3 win WSOP entries to a $1500 event + $700 in travel money.

• I have been on a nice roll in the Sunday night game chopping the last 4.

• I’ve wanted to get back to the Hollywood Casino to try some PLO cash game action, but the timing hasn’t been good yet.

• I just completed Positively Fifth Street by James McManus. It is really two stories in one, as Jim takes us through his ride in the WSOP Main Event, and covers the Ted Binion murder case. I would recommend it, as Jim is a writer so the story telling is better than most of the other poker books, which are focused on strategic play.

I am nearly finished with Daniel Negreanu’s Power Hold’Em Strategy, and have started Jeff Hwang’s Pot-Limit Omaha Poker.

I made $150 tonight total on the 4 PLO tables.

November Poker Summary

• Ferguson Challenge Update – I started November with $186.49, and finished with $2494.77. Yes it was a good month! I found a tourney ($5.50 PLHA) that I had some nice successes in, placing 2nd ($95), 1st ($127.19), 1st ($148.85), and 2nd ($139.23). In addition, FTP is running a Holiday Hundred bonus promotion, with a max of $100 bonus available over a 30 day period. Thus, I’ve been playing more cash games, mostly 9-handed PLO. Halfway thru the bonus period I have cleared half the bonus for $50. I was up $130.52 for PLO cash games in November. The big bankroll jump took place when I took 2nd place on November 28th in the Daily Double A ($10 + 2) out of 1,521 players for $1771.97! Sure I got lucky in a few spots along the way, and I would have won 1st place if I hadn’t gotten 4-flushed on the river in our last hand heads up when my A5 hit a 5 on the flop vs his A3. So, what this means for the Ferguson challenge is I started the month being able to buy-in to cash games for $9, and ended the month being able to buy-in for $120! Obviously there is still a long way to go, but November 2009 should provide a big boost in my attempt to complete the Ferguson Challenge.

• I took 2nd place in the November NCPC Event #4, and am still in 1st place with 6 events remaining.

• I played in a $50 tourney @ a former co-workers house the day after Thanksgiving and ended up in a 3-way chop for $265. Gave back some of it afterward though playing $1/$2 Stud.

• On November 6th I checked out the new Hollywood Casino (former Argosy) for the 1st time. I played in a $125 NL Bounty Tournament. I knocked out a couple players for $20 each, but ended up missing on a straight flush draw and didn’t cash. The WPT Poker Room is definitely a lot bigger & nicer than the old one.

• I just completed Gus Hansen’s Every Hand Revealed and am halfway through Daniel Negreanu’s Power Hold’Em Strategy. I would recommend both, as they take different approaches toward improving your game.

End of October Poker Updates

October was the 1st losing month for me since starting the Ferguson challenge. I started the month with $243.21 and ended with $186.49. I think getting above $200 & playing $10 tourneys was what cost me. I didn't play close to the # as cash games in Oct that I did in Sept. As the old saying goes, "Ring games are for making $ and tourneys are for fun".

After 3 NCPC events I am still in 1st place, with a 4th place finish in October. 7 more events to go & the top 3 finishers win WSOP Prize packages.

I am currently 8th in the Goshen Poker League after the 1st 2 events in October.

I am currently reading Power Hold'em Strategy by Daniel Negreanu and Every Hand Revealed by Gus Hansen.

In addition to the WSOP on ESPN, I also watched 2M2MM. In the whole season I think they only talked poker stategy one time, so if they bring it back next year I hope there is more strategy discussion.
